Although this is the second book in the series, I read all the others first as they were available with Kindle Unlimited. The others got me hooked, so I splurged on this one.

Blaze is the story of Luke and Keira, two former fire fighters who gained paranormal abilities after being injured in a chemical explosion. They and the rest of the team are being pursued by the ruthless government rogues that created the chemicals and is now testing them on humans.

Luke and Keira had been a couple about three years before. In this story, after a long separation, they meet again when assigned in their new roles as federal agents to a Waco-style shoot-out. Together, they rescue a bunch of children who were just about to drink the Kool-aid. Among them is a beautiful little boy who speaks only Greek, and with whom Keira has a deep and inexplicable connection. During the adventure, Luke and Keira find that their attraction to one another is stronger than ever.

I really like all the characters in this series. Swan excels at making each of them different, and at creating riveting plotlines. Mateo, the aforementioned little boy, is adorable and adds extra warmth to an already tight team.

I like Luke and Keira as individual members of the team. What I don't like is their relationship as a couple. They argue constantly, and sometimes it's camaraderie and sometimes it's just plain passive-aggressive or mean. Keira's childhood baggage has made her noncommittal, and her love for Luke is constantly short-circuited by fear; she pulls him in, then pushes him away, over and over. They seem immature, and their sex is more rough than romantic. They're my least favorite couple in the team. These issues may not bother you, though. It's just my opinion.

My favorite is still Fever, book one, with Teague and Alyssa's story (You must read that one!).

Luke and Keira have a past, and this second chances romance is explosive with sexual chemistry. The pair are so right for each other. Watching the greater series plot unfold a little more raises additional questions while answering some. A few plot holes had me thinking "huh?" such as Keira's ability to mind-read except when it matters most.
The series might be "old" but my interest in reading them is still high. I'll pick up book three soon. Can't wait for Q's story!

Sensuality Rated R to X, depending upon opinion

Even more engrossing than the first volume, this novel explores the relationship between Luke Ransom and Keira O'Shay, two of the hazmat team that gained special powers after they were exposed to chemicals from a warehouse fire. Both the villains and the heroes of this series are interesting and flawed not just black and white caricatures.Under constant surveillance by the government, Keira and Luke have both changed careers since they broke up because of her fear of being a mother. As guardian for his niece Kat while her father Teague Creek is in prison for murder. Luke wants a life that includes children of their own. Having suffered serious abuse as a foster child and feeling responsible for the presumed death of her older brother from a fire she accidentally caused Keira feels incapable of having responsibility for a family of her own, sure that she would cause them to be lost. Because she can hear others talking and their thoughts, Keira found it impossible to continue as a firefighter hearing the screams of those trapped but out of reach. Luke does not understand her many fears and views her desire to go to the FBI academy as abandonment. The novel opens at a federal siege of a compound full of children including the kidnapped son of a fellow FBI agent that Keira has tracked to what was thought to be a religious compound but is instead another government research lab. As the number one sniper in the country Keira has been assigned to shoot the leader and the ATF agent assigned to be her cover is Luke Ransom. Their special gifts are deeply enhanced when they are together extending even to a sharing of thoughts and feelings. Luke is impervious to fire but when Keira is near his skin becomes virtually impenetrable. They learn that the same woman responsible for Teague's problems is behind these experiments. There is nothing she won't so, no one she won't sacrifice including children in order to achieve superiority over our enemies. Turns out that Mateo is not the child of her fellow agent; he is in fact the son of Keira's brother who had not died in the house fire but who is in fact a chemical genius who the DoD has imprisoned to force him to develop substances to protect our soldiers from harm but using techniques of which he did not morally approve. Killing his wife and kidnapping his son is not the only evil thing she does; she even allows experiments on the child who was born with a remote viewing gift. The child only speaks Greek but with the help of an interpreter they are able to locate Keira's missing brother and after much danger rescue him. We learn in this volume that Alyssa and Teague are expecting a child of their own and we are introduced to other team members. Mitch Ransom is again integral to providing the intelligence and resources needed to mount the operations first to rescue Keira and the child from a kidnapper and then his father from the Castle at Area 51. We also learn about a strange captive named only Q who has possession of a unique coin issued to the team after the warehouse fire. Can their dead team mate Quaid have actually been kidnapped rather than buried? Can he have survived the fire since the team was unable to find him in his cell during the rescue operation of Chase O'Shay? Was Joyce Dargan killed or did she again survive her latest aborted attempt to nullify their hazmat team? Simply cannot wait for the next installment of this gripping series which contains wonderfully exciting scenes of intimacy between the lovers in the novels as well as lots of explosions and chases involving gunfire. I especially enjoyed the way the author explores the problems between couples who love each other but cannot easily overcome their differences. Her depiction of the main villain as a woman dedicated to the protection of her country but having lost sight of the idea central to our nation and its justice system that the good of the many is not more important than the good of a single individual is also compelling. If the third volume as even partly as interesting as the first two installments, it should be a best seller.
The second book in the Phoenix Rising series is more complete, more complex, and better written than the first. Luke and Keira, who we met in "Fever" return and are reluctantly thrown together on an op. They had tried to make a go of their relationship before - before the warehouse fire. This book adds to the story of the group of firefighters involved, and their paranormal abilities. Don't let the word scare you. This is fast paced and emotional. I loved it - loved the steamy relationship, the story, the background. OK, 4.55 - because Keira can be really annoying. That would be my only complaint - but Luke makes up for it, and we find out why Keira is the tough girl. On to the next book!
