After a video of Kai and his secret boyfriend is sent to his classmates, he commits suicide leaving behind twelve envelops for his best friend Jem to open monthly for the next year. While the dozen letters are suppose to inspire her to live her best life, Jem plots revenge against those who she believes caused Kai’s suicide. At the end of the twelve months, Jem plots to commit suicide.

Jem is one of the most horrible characters I’ve read recently. Even before Kai’s death she’s simply unkind to everyone but Kai. She has no other friends and while railing against the popular kids, her own judgments are just as bad. She makes fun of the one girl who tries to support and befriend her after Kai’s death. The revenge she plots against the three boys she blames is cruel, almost sociopathological. She falsely outs one boy as gay, not even considering in might lead him to suicide like Kai. Whenever Jem showed glimpses of conscience, she talks herself out of doing the right (or not wrong) thing.

I’m not certain why I loved UNDONE when I didn’t like Jem. I guess I kept waiting and hoping that she might turn herself around. I didn’t want her to hurt anyone. One of Kai’s requests was that she look after his younger (and homophobic) sister. For as devoted as Jem was to Kai, I didn’t understand why she wouldn’t nurture a relationship with her former friend. Kai was their link.

I wish all of Cat Clarke’s books were available for Kindle. I love her writing, even when I don’t love the characters. I don’t think UNDONE will appeal to every reader, but if you’re okay with unkind narrators, you’ll probably enjoy this.

Undone was pretty intense. Jem and Kai have been best friends forever. Other than his family, Jem is the only person who knows Kai is gay. At least until someone mass e-mails a video of Kai with a mystery guy to the whole school. A few days later, Kai jumped off a bridge. Now, Jem is understandably devastated, and she doesn't want to live in world without Kai. But then his sister delivers a reason to keep her going for at least another year.

It did take me a bit to get into Undone, mostly because Jem was hard to warm up to. I didn't quite believe that she was in love with Kai, especially knowing that he was gay. But I do believe in the power of their friendship. Jem is also extremely judgmental of the popular crowd. She's basically invisible, and no one knows who she is until after Kai's death, but even then she's just know as that dead gay kid's best friend. Certainly not much better. But her judgements are part of the journey. Kai left her a series of letters, and he tells her to be more open to people, which she does.

The main plot of Undone is Jem exacting revenge on those who did this to her best friend. Her plan is to get in with those popular kids, ruin them, then take her own life. That is a very dark plot, and not something I have come across before. I really enjoyed it though. I loved seeing Jem change as she gets deeper into the plan. Things do not go the way she expects at all after spending a year with these kids who she'd never even considered talking to before. The only thing that kept me from totally loving it though, was that I figured out who sent out the video and who the mystery guy was right away.

Undone was great. I've never encountered anything like this before. Those last several chapters are fantastic! Knowing who really did it didn't stop me from being shocked at everything else that was going on. Then that ending? Geez. I honestly didn't expect it to turn out that way.
Loved the book could not put it down. I would highly recommend this book. Can't wait to read more books from this author.

This book was absolutely amazing from start to finish. It has drama, romance, suspense and everything else you'd imagine a great book to be. I finished this book over the course of two days. The ending will have your jaw hanging that's for sure.

A couple of years ago I read Thirteen Reasons Why and to this day it is still my favorite book. When I read the description of this book I knew I wanted to read it because of the similarity. I immediately got really into this book and I couldn't put it down. There was always the constant suspense of what Jem was going to do. Of course throughout the book I always wanted the opposite of what she said she was going to do. Anyway, this book makes you fall in love with every single character no matter how small their role is. Read this book and you will fall in love with the characters and the plot and everything.
